Good Times at Donovan Lakes
Thanks to Everett S. for having club members down to flyfish these awesome private lakes. Some impressive fish were caught in the five to seven pound range and some monsters got away breaking large tipits and making grown men cry. Fishing was from small boats with large trolling motors. Gear was primarily eight and nine weight rods with heavy lines, leaders and tippits to get the large flys and poppers to the target. It was primarily top water fishing, casting to weedy shore or mid lake structure.
The hot fly was the Stealth Bomber. Techniques were short strip and pause with the take normally on the pause. Sometimes the fly would just gently dissappear underwater. More often there was a heart stopping explosion as the bass smashed the fly. But this lunker to the left was caught by Joe on his black rabbit strip imitation of the local Siren salamander as it sank. Our favorite story is when Roger tied into a hog that he couldn't believe was so big it was towing his boat around in circles...until he realized he had knocked over the trolling motor tiller. It's a great facility and a good chance to wrastle some bass that'l make you grunt!. Special thanks to Everett and Dick as gracious hosts and wicked guides.
